February 21, 2008 -
7th Annual GWCHE
Science Fair
How does sunlight affect color?
What causes a volcano to erupt? What does E=mc2 mean? How does
photosynthesis work? What is the most effective detergent? How do sound
waves work? What is the most effective airplane wing shape? How are
auroras formed? What causes goosebumps? How does a camera work?
These are all questions we may have
wondered about some time in our lives. We all know that it is the job
of science to explore and attempt to answer these questions. The
facets of science range from A to Z. Think of Astronomy, Biology,
Chemistry, Computers, Earth Science, Engineering, Geology, Medicine,
Physics, and Zoology and more!
GWCHE will host its 7th
Annual Science Fair on Thursday, February 21 for all
students to show off their creativity and learning. All ages may
participate and everyone can go home a winner! There is an award ribbon
for each participant. In addition, participants will be entered in a
drawing to win some cool scientific door prizes!
If you haven’t started on a project
yet, don’t panic… there is plenty of time left! Find an interesting
topic that you will enjoy learning about and get busy! A science model
or project is welcome! Your project does not have to be complex. Once
you have chosen your topic, visit the GWCHE library, the Waco public
library or the internet. After researching, proceed with your
scientific method: purpose, hypothesis, procedure, results (graphs,
charts, drawings, pictures) and conclusions.
Let’s make this the best science
fair in GWCHE history! Please sign up today by contacting our
coordinator at
sciencefair@gwche.org.
The deadline to enter is February 13.
Participants may begin setting up at 6:00 p.m. the day of the fair.
Even if you don’t enter a project in
the fair, please bring the entire family to listen to a fantastic
presentation by Dr. SteveTroxel on “Hearing God in Science: How We
Hear Leads us to God”, and to support and learn from all the
students who have participated. We’ll see you at Highland Baptist
(3014 Maple Ave.) Thursday, February 21, at 6:30 p.m. for a
great educational time!
Digging deeper on topics such as Astronomy, Botany,
Chemistry, Computers, Engineering, Geology, Oceanography, Physics,
Zoology or others can be a fun, educational and a rewarding experience!
One way to do a Science Fair Project is to:
- Select a topic and ask a “big question”. Use this
question to make a hypothesis. Books in the city libraries, GWCHE
library and websites can give great ideas for projects. The GWCHE website has additional information and links.

- Test your hypothesis by performing experiments
and record the data.
- Create a display that includes your hypothesis,
experiment procedure description, data
collection (can include pictures, drawings,
charts) and the conclusion. A research paper
is optional.

Held in February at the GWCHE general meeting, this is a
great way for your child to hone those science skills! All who
participate are awarded a ribbon, and there is the possibility of
promotion to the regional science fair.
