Printer-friendly version of History Tips.

This year there is an optional theme of Conflict and Compromise in History.  This theme is complex and asks students to view history through multiple perspectives.  In some cases, conflicts existed without compromise.  In others, compromise was reached before major conflicts ensued.  In the end, some conflicts were averted with compromises, like treaties.  However, more often, events in history reflect both conflict and compromise.  For more information about the theme and topics visit the National History Day website.

This year we will acknowledge the efforts of The Most Thought Provoking K-5 and 6-12 entries which correspond with the theme..

Here are some helpful hints and information for those who are considering entering a project in the fair.

The thought of doing a history fair project can be overwhelming, especially if you have never done one. We are aware that many people have not even considered doing a project.   We are aware too that the deadline for this project is fast approaching. We would like to encourage all students who wish to participate.  All participants in the GWCHE history fair will be recognized and awarded for their participation.

Projects do not need to be elaborate.  They can be  simple biographies about favorite characters in history or artwork created by the child to describe something in history.  They can even be a display of foods that people would have eaten during that time or place in history.  Students can create a scene by dressing up in a particular time period and displaying items used by the people of that time.  Story boards and dioramas would also be good ideas. Research papers and display boards are obviously more time consuming and may not be possible for this year's fair, but are great ways of communicating history.

Whatever students have to offer whether great or small will be welcomed. We would like to have as much participation as possible.  Perhaps students have projects they have worked on in the past, but have not had an avenue to present their work.  This is a great opportunity to get those projects out, dust them off, and work at making them presentable.

We
ask that all projects be of a nature that can be displayed on or near a table.  We will not be able to include projects like dramas, recitations, or video productions that require an attentive audience.

Held in October of each year at the GWCHE general meeting, this event is open for history lovers of all ages.  Participants will display many types of table projects and will receive a ribbon for participation.  Students in grades 5 - 12 could promote to a regional level.
